Bring some food, eat some food. Chill with some of Sacramento's best artists and maybe even do a little shopping.

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly two million dollars to support charities in the communities in which it operates. With your help, we hope to raise $1,000,000 for Children’s Miracle Network in 2009! http://www.ihoppancakeday.com/

When Ma Petit Bakery & Café inauspiciously soft-opened Thursday (Nov. 13), it served only a handful of sandwiches and pastries for lunch and dinner. By this morning, chef Nary Kim, 39, had ramped up to offer her first omelets, croissants and breakfast sandwiches. Ma Petit plans to expand its offerings day by day until the bistro's official opening Nov. 24.

Located on the ground floor of downtown's Douglas Building at 3rd and Spring streets, it offers a menu of sandwiches, salads, pastas, grilled meats and, of course, pastries, that should be a welcome addition to the area's dining scene.

"When we were building this restaurant, we were looking into this area for a long time," Kim says. "Downtown L.A. is either fast food or high-class, sit-down meals, but I thought that something like Ma Petit was missing in this area." Read the rest of this entry »

I arrived in Oakland around 2pm and pulled up to Brown Sugar Kitchen to find quite the crowd with a few patrons on the exterior that were waiting to be seated. I just knew that after I found a parking spot, I was going to go inside only to find out there’d be like an hour wait or something. Luckily, there was an open seat at the corner of the bar just as I entered. I was seated immediately and handed a menu (cork pop!).

I didn’t have to look at the menu long before I made my choice. A pulled pork sandwich served on a roll and topped with slaw which contains lime, onions and jalapeños and a side of dirty rice. After a few minutes, I was informed by the cook that they were out of gizzards for the rice, an ingredient I was unaware the dish contained, and asked me if vegetarian dirty rice was okay. “Fine by me,” I replied.

My meal arrived shortly thereafter and it was everything I’d hoped for. The dirty rice contained sautéed zucchini, chopped green and red bell peppers and some leafy green that I cannot name. The pulled pork was excellent and both items were spicy and very flavorful. The rice was actually the spicier of the two, so I had to drink plenty of water to keep my cool.

While BSK has some items that are more expensive than others, this place is pretty affordable. My meal was about $10 and there are plenty of choices on the menu in that price group. If you’re passing through Oakland, live there or just wanna grab some good food to eat, then Brown Sugar Kitchen is the place for you. Picture after the jump.

My original plan for today was to get up this morning at 7, shave, shower and be at Midas to get an oil change between 8 and 8:30. That didn’t happen. I did get up at 7, but instead of immediately making my way to the bathroom, I messed around on the web, hopped on IRC for a bit and pretty much procrastinated.

I finally motivated myself to take care of business and eventually walked out of my apartment a little after 9. I had to stop by a friend’s house to pick up the jacket I’d left there the night before and in the jacket pocket was my USB thumb drive which I needed with me while I was out today.

After picking up my jacket, I drove to Midas and arrived just before 10 o’clock. I knew arriving this late would increase my wait time on Saturday if I could even be fit in at all. The gentleman informed me that it’d be about an hour wait because he only had two racks which he could put my car on and sure enough, both of those racks were in use.

After waiting a little over an hour and a half, the mechanic pulls my car into the garage and begins to service it. It only took him about 20-30 minutes to finish with my car and he informed me that he’d tightened a bolt on the exhaust system in the front to stop the annoying rattling sound I’d been hearing for some time. I thanked the gentleman, paid the minuscule fee for discarding the used oil and hit the road, as it was now 12:30pm.

To Be Continued…
